Waldoboro Soccer photo day Saturday

The Waldoboro Soccer picture day will be Saturday Sept. 27 at Medomak Valley High School. The schedule for teams will be as follows:

8:40am K/2 RED
9:00am K/2 DARK GREEN
9:20am K/2 PURPLE
9:40am 5/6 WAL 2 (LT BLUE)
10:00am K/2 NAVY BLUE
10:20am 3/4 ROYAL BLUE
10:40am 3/4 GOLD
11:00am 3/4 RED
11:20am 5/6 WAL1 (FL GREEN)

We will use half the gym for photos and the other half for indoor games due to the expected weather.

Please be sure to bring your envelopes for photos. Also please arrive 5-10 minutes prior to your scheduled time so the coach can get the team organized and we cab stay on schedule.

Rockland and Five Town football mix it up

The Five Town Football jayvee peewee football club played Rockland at Wasgatt Field Saturday evening.

Rockland dominated the game from start to finish, but the young Five Town football players never gave up.

The jayvee peewee teams are made up of third fourth and fifth grade players. Rockland has some sixth graders on the team, but they did not participate in this game.

Hampton Beach vacation day three

Saturday we got out early and went to Portsmouth looking for an Apple Store with no success. Oh well.

On the way back we took route 1A which goes along the ocean through Rye Beach and into Hampton Beach where we both took some photos. We stopped at North Hampton Beach to get some photos of the surfer dudes, something we do not get a chance to photograph much here.

Tonight is Pat Benatar, but no photos as they do not allow cameras. Would have liked to have taken some.

Tomorrow we will be heading home and back to work on Monday.

Hampton Beach day 2, having fun

Last night I played with trying to get some shots with a subject in focus moving at a good speed with very little light. This is what you do when you are on vacation.

This was from the balcony of our motel room looking at the street below.

This is the motel we are staying at in Hampton Beach. It is called the Tides Motel and its OK, just a really funky bathroom that is very small.

I did not feel real well today so not may photos from the beach, but I really liked this one.

The waves were coming in pretty well this morning, not what you would call surfing waves, but much bigger then normal for this area of the beaches in New Hampshire.

Kathleen got the biggest kick out of this one. We saw a lot of guys lugging a lot of stuff to the beach, but this guy was having all he could do to haul this across the sand to where his wife, who was not carrying much of anything, was waiting for him to get there. It was quite fuuny to watch.

Hampton Beach vacation day one

Kathleen is pretty close to heaven right here, lying in the sand at the beach while we are waiting to check into the hotel.

Vacation on the beach is a great way to unwind and that is just what my wife Kathleen and I will be doing for the next few days. While some people think Hampton Beach is a little on the sleazy side, we find its a great place to relax, do some people watching and enjoy some nice weather on the beach.

The beach was packed, but this man had found a place to sit by himself and enjoy the wonder of the Atlantic Ocean.
This seagull was caught gliding in for some food that someone had thrown on the beach.

Friday will be another day on the beach and Saturday will be some shopping during the day while it rains and then off to see Pat Benatar at the Club Casino.

Windjammers win annual Coastal field hockey tournament

The Camden Hills field hockey team won their first ever preseason Coastal Field Hockey Tournament Championship Monday, Aug. 25.

The tournament has been an annual event since the early 1980's when it was started by Belfast coach Allen Holmes. A few years ago they moved the tournament to Camden Hills as it was a more neutral location for the local midcoast teams that participate in the event.

The final standings for the 20087 tournament were, 1, Camden Hills, 52 points; 2, Belfast, 47; 3, Mount View, 43; 4, Georges Valley, 17; and 5, Rockland, 2.

Totals are determined by points scored and shots on goal during 25 minute running time games. A shot on goal stopped by the opposing team is one point while a goal is five points. Each team plays four games and the final point total determines the champion.

This tournament is traditionally the first preseason play day in the midcoast thus starting the fall sport season for our local schools. While I'm on vacation, I have not missed this event since it came to Camden a few years ago and I find it a great opportunity to see some good field hockey, see many of the athletes that I have covered over the years and renew my association with the coaches.

Field hockey is a great sport to watch and as a photographer I find it a challenge to shoot. The players are always running with their head down watching the ball as they dribble it up and down the field. This tends to make the all important facial expression in action photography that we look for difficult at best to capture.

Harmonica blowout draws large crowd to The Strand Theater

California harmonica player Mark Hummel and his band, The Blues Survivors, joined forces with the Whammer Jammer man himself Magic Dick and special guest, blues man, Kenny Neal for a Harmonica Blowout Aug. 19, at The Strand Theater in Rockland.

A large audience boogied in their seats and danced on the makeshift dance floor as they were presented with a night of rollicking blues presented by local blues promoter Paul Benjamin.

Hummel and the Blues Survivors followed local blues band The Blind Albert Blues Band with some rousing selections that got the crowd dancing and singing to some classic blues numbers including the great "Summertime" as heard on the slideshow below.

After Hummel warmed the crowd, Mr. Entertainer, Kenny Neal took the stage and proceeded to just blow people away with his accomplished harp playing and charisma on the stage. Neal walked and sang the crowd through some solid blues alternating between some Chicago Blues style harmonica playing and some amazing and all to rare acoustic harp playing.

Neal is known for his guitar playing, but after his performance in Rockland there is no doubt he can handle the harp with the best of them.

The slideshow below features Neal on harp with the Blues Survivors and also features photos from the superjam with Neal, Hummel, Dick and Maine's own D.W. Gill of the Blues Prophets, that closed the show.
